In the elemental world, reputation is everything, but gaining it can get you killed.

Setting up shop as an antiquities hunter means nothing if you don’t have clients. Benjamin Vecchio, nephew of a famed vampire assassin, is the subject of widespread speculation, but so far that speculation hasn’t translated into work.
What Ben needs is a job. A big job. A profitable job.

A legendary job.

Finding the lost sword of Brennus the Celt, the mythical Raven King of the British Isles, would make Ben’s reputation in the immortal world, but it could also draw dangerous attention. The Raven King’s gold hoard isn’t famous for being easy to find. Luckily, Ben has his own legend at his side.

Tenzin is a wind vampire who doesn’t like digging, but she’s more than happy to let Ben do the dirty work while she provides the muscle he needs to make other immortals pay attention. They’re partners. Or so Ben thinks.
But when finding this treasure puts Tenzin’s future plans at risk, will their partnership survive? Tenzin isn’t used to taking orders from anyone, particularly from a young human who used to be her student. Digging into ancient Scottish history can get you dirty. It can also get you killed.

Omens and Artifacts is the final prequel novella in the Elemental Legacy series. Ben and Tenzin's first full novel, Midnight Labyrinth, will be available on November 7, 2017.

When you’re all like, “YES YES YES” but also, “NO NO NO”!
You know what I’m talking about, right?
You know how much I love my Elizabeth Hunter. And when her prolific self sends me an ARC, I am all like:

But this book is different.

Omens & Artifacts is the latest addition to the Elemental universe of books. The final novella in the Elemental legacy prequel group, this story bridges us into a new variety of novels from EH. We knew inevitably that stories featuring the dynamic duo of Tenzin and Ben would be their own brand of awesome. But this is also a departure from the vampire world we have known, so basically twice in a few months I have had to say goodbye to characters who I love dearly.

Gio and B may pop in from time-to-time, but it’s a different focus. These books, as far as I can tell, have a new focus more on this treasure-hunting duo. Yes, they are in the same world, and we do meet characters that have been connected, but we’re researching lore and legend, finding pieces of history lost to time, and enjoying the interplay and banter of #BENZIN.

These books, as far as I can tell, have a new focus more on this treasure-hunting duo. Yes, they are in the same world, and we do meet characters that have been connected, but we’re researching lore and legend, finding pieces of history lost to time, and enjoying the interplay and banter of #BENZIN.

But a part of me is sad about that. A part of me wants to stay in the safety of a library with B and Gio, and wait for Carwyn to call out, “Darling girl” in a hideous Hawaiian shirt. And though that might occasionally happen in this series, I know that those stories are a part of the myth and legend of this EH family, and the new generation of books get their time to shine.

All that being said, Ben and Tenzin have a magical connection and tension that will instantly reel you in. The comedic moments, in particular Tenzin and Cara, are pure gold, and I actually found myself laughing out loud.

While I am in love with this twosome, and cannot wait to see where things go (queue the Louis Armstrong music), I also understand that this is a whole new adventure in a whole microcosm of a universe we love. The story arc we have followed through so many books is over, and these characters are moving on in life. We have to move on with them. As we see these two settle into life as “adults” (I use that term loosely since Tenzin may never grow up 😉 ) makes us see the potential in who they are as individuals, how they improve when together, and what they could be as a couple… when that inevitably happens…

…because it BETTER happen, EH. This much sexual tension better lead up to some explosive lovemaking is ALL I am saying.

Anyway, back to the story.

So this novella takes us on an adventure seeking out the treasure of a lost age. By lining up folklore with vampire history, Ben finds what may be one of the greatest treasures of our time. He will have to survive the nights against vampires who are seeking to stop him, or beat him to it. And Tenzin will need to step in to protect what’s hers… and I don’t mean an old sword.

I love where this is going, and I liked the introduction of a new potential suitor for Tenzin (seriously!), though I don’t think Ben would agree with me.

In short, this was an interesting jaunt through history and into a new adventure. It was a nice bridge and I know that based on this novella, the full length novels will blow me away!

If you have yet to start the Elemental universe of books, you need to rectify that immediately. This is my #1 most recommended book… so start with A Hidden Fire and go from there. It’s free for Kindle so, ya know, why wouldn’t you?

Omens and Artifacts Elemental Legacy Novella 075 edition by Elizabeth Hunter Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Wow.
Where do I begin? I know. BENZIN. If you've read previous Elemental Legacy books, Shadows and Gold An Elemental Legacy Novella you know Benzin. *And if you're looking at this book, you really need to read the others.* Their partnership is an absolute riot. Tenzin is ten shades of batshit and her knowledge and superior intellect makes her incredibly formidable, but her strange naïveté about the modern world (YAY! HGTV!) cuts an endearing swath through her willful flickers of impertinence. Ben knows his place in the immortal world, but aches for more, even though he is averse to becoming immortal. I love the tug and pull of that lure that is felt throughout.

And this book plays on those aspects perfectly. Ben and Tenzin's first really big immortal "stuff hunting" gig deals in legends and intrigue. Hiring himself, essentially, Ben and Tenzin go on the hunt for a sword believed to be lost forever or entirely fictional. But Ben is determined and Tenzin is old and doesn't give a fang.

It's a tumult of a narrative. The novella moves so fast you're likely to experience kindle whiplash. (This is where you're shocked at something and throw your head back so fast you hurt yourself.) And though fast--nothing is missed. You never feel like you aren't a part of the story or that there are gaps in the plot line as is the case in so many adventure-y/mystery books. That's not to say you'll catch everything--it's super unpredictable. But it's complete. And I still want more.
I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Hunter's Elemenatal Series and I have been so caught up in this world that I often finish her many novellaes in a day. This book seemed very rushed and quite predictable regarding the plot but as always enjoy Tenzin and Ben's many humorous exchanges of wit. I would rather have waited and read this book with a longer format and be a novel instead of another short story that over just as I started to immerse myself in this world of many fun and intriguing jagged back alleys.I felt a distraction and disconnect in this book that I have never felt from Ms. Hunter's other novels and hope that the future books will at least be long enough for me fall in love with this series as I did the Elemental Series.Glad your life is fuller now but it seems to show in how fast this very short story came out and I can wait for a longer and more detailed novel next time and I new the old vamp was alive when the quest was first mentioned and that is not a good thing.
This was another quick little story about Ben and Tenzin which was entertaining but seemed to spend a significant page count doing nothing much unless you just like to read about Ben and Tenzin arguing, talking, etc.

Obviously, we do want to see where this relationship goes and some of the banter was good but some just burned pages.

Since I assume we will get a story about them with some meat on the bone soon, there are a couple of things that it seems might pop up again in the future so what might not look like much now might become something in a later story.

The real push behind this story is that Ben and Tenzin have set themselves up as antiquities hunters but they have no clients, so the obvious solution, find something legendary that people have searched for centuries but never found to build a reputation for their new business. Enter the legendary sword of Brennus The Celt, King of Scotland, the Raven King and the actual search for lost sword of The Vampire King was highly entertaining and had a few twists that you were not expecting that were enjoyable.

Bottom Line A good story, likable characters as always and you keep wondering about the future of this "partnership". 4 Stars and after reading A Stone-Kissed Sea which looked like it may be closing the "Elixir" themed stories I wonder if we may see more of Ben and Tenzin in full length novels soon
